From Kitchen to Cash: Creative Side Hustle Ideas for Stay-at-Home Moms

I have been a full time stay-at-home mom for almost 8 years now. However; very rarely have I not had some type of side income coming in. From photography, to graphic design, to selling products, to now blogging. There were also many years where I was working part-time to be able to be home most of the time. With that being said, I wanted to share some ideas of real, authentic side hustles for moms. Not all side hustles are created equal.

What is a side hustle?

A side hustle means you are earning extra money. For stay-at-home moms, this is likely their only form of income they are personally bringing in.

Are all side hustles worth it?

Absolutely not. I have tried numerous side hustles from transcription jobs to survey sites. They took a lot of time and energy and barely brought anything in. You want something you enjoy, but is also worth your time and money.

Part-Time Job

One of the easiest side hustles for moms is simply getting part time work. There were many years when I was homeschooling and working about 16 hours a week at a restaurant on my husband’s days off. Some moms get jobs they can work after their kids go to bed, from about 7 pm-midnight. It’s not much, but it gets you out of the house and you’re earning something. This is great is you’re trying to pay off debt.

Freelancing

Freelancing is honestly easier than ever to get into. Most of these aren’t even jobs that require degrees anymore. I have a degree in graphic design, but with websites like Canva, it’s totally possible that you can teach yourself different skills to do freelance work. Here are some ideas:

  • Bookkeeping
  • Data entry
  • Virtual assistant
  • Proofreading
  • Editing
  • Graphic design
  • Software development

There are so many more categories and subcategories you could go into, but this is just a basic idea.

Blogging or Content Creation

I’m not going to say blogging or content creation is easy because it’s certainly not. It may seem like anyone can do it, yet very few actually do make a full-time income. Yet, there are several people who can do it and make a small part-time income. The key to online content creation is consistency. Even just working during your kids nap or bedtimes has been enough.

There are also some added costs that can be involved, however, there are also many free places to start like Blogspot, Youtube, social media, etc. Most online influencers actually earn their income through these means:

  • Ads
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Sponsored posts
  • Selling merchandise

Online Teaching

As a homeschooler, I know several former teachers who actually teach online, usually before their kids even get up. For most, you only need a bachelor’s degree, no matter what field it’s in. Here are a few I am most familiar with.

Online Store

Another good side hustle for moms is selling products on an online store. If you’re very good at a craft or hobby, you can sell them online. Digital products are also super easy to get into and is mostly passive income.

Become a Dog Walker

One good option for side hustles for moms is pet sitting or dog walking. This would be great if you have kids in school or something to do a few hours a week while your spouse is home.

Make Deliveries for Restaurants or Grocery Stores

My husband and I have both personally been driving for Doordash for years. We love the flexibility. It’s even a great side hustle for introverts like us. Yes, it does put wear and tear on your car and require gas. If you’re lucky, you can stay in a certain area and not have to put in too many miles. However; if we have something coming up that we know we will need some money for, we simply hop on the app and go or schedule a time. We work a few hours and usually almost always make about $100. Considering a lot of the things on this list, it requires such a small amount of effort.

Babysitting or After-School Care

This is another one I have personally done. I have done babysitting and respite care for foster parents. To be honest, I didn’t love this one. I absolutely love kids, but I felt like I was constantly working around their schedules, not allowed to have any flexibility and freedom, etc. This may just be my personal experience, it’s just something to keep in mind, especially if you have small children of your own. Illnesses, appointments, and other things come up that can be hard to work around.
