Expert Tips to Save Money on Diapers
I don’t consider myself an expert on hardly anything, however, saving money on diapers is one of them. After 5 kids, I don’t think I have ever spent full price on diapers. There really is no point. Saving money on diapers is extremely easy to do, even with very minimal effort. Some of my money saving ways take more time and energy than more people care to use, but even my friends have adopted several of my money saving strategies and have saved thousands!
I am about to have 2 kids in diapers again, so I implement several of these strategies. That’s the great thing about this list! Many of these strategies to save money on diapers can actually be combined to make the savings add up to even more!
Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers have come such a long way. They really are the best way to save money on diapers. I get that they’re not for everyone. If you work full time or don’t have a washer and dryer, that can make it super difficult. Even cloth diapering part-time can save a lot of money. I used to cloth diaper several of my children, but now have extremely hard water, making it extremely difficult and frustrating, so I can relate. However; it’s still worth looking into! Here are a few of my favorite brands.
Price Comparison Per Diaper
This is probably the most important tip on this list. This tip isn’t just for diapers though. Comparing the cost per item or ounce is the best way to save money on everything. It definitely comes in handy when purchasing diapers. It’s especially easy to see the cost per diaper when online grocery shopping. Sometimes, even with multiple discounts and sales, the generic and secondary brands of diapers may still end up being cheaper, so it’s worth investigating even if you’re using some of these other strategies.
Generic Brand
As a first time parent I absolutely cringed at the thought of using generic or secondary brands of diapers. As a mom of five, I roll my eyes at my former self. Most generic brands are actually put out by those top name brand companies. I actually prefer my Luv’s brand diapers to just about every other diaper on the market. Don’t be a diaper snob. Buy a small pack of a few different generic or secondary brand diapers and give them a try. If you hate them, you can always donate them or give them to a friend, but then you will know.
Shop Sales to Save Money on Diapers
Diapers are one of those items that constantly go on sale. Keep an eye on them and stock up when you find a good deal. Don’t wait until the last minute when you’re almost out and realize you have to pay full price. If your baby happens to outgrow the next size that you may have purchased beforehand, you can always return it and swap it out for the next size up.
Use Store & Manufacture Coupons
Stores are always offering different coupons and deals on diapers. Sometimes it’s a few dollars off or save $20 on $75 spent. The two main stores I shop with these types of coupons are Meijer and Kroger. Using these store coupons mixed with a few of these other strategies adds up to big savings. I have gotten a box of Huggies for as little as $5…in 2024! So it’s totally possible!
Sometimes, you can even stack manufacture coupons, with store coupons, and reward apps. That’s a true super savings!
Use Rewards Apps
If you’re not using rewards apps, you need to be! They are such an easy way to save money and probably take the least amount of effort. Literally just snapping a receipt or scanning your email for e-receipts. The two I used are always running diaper deals on Huggies, Pampers, Luvs, training pants, and even some higher end brands. Shop Consignment Stores & Sales
People will get diapers as gifts or open a pack and not need them. Maybe their baby had a reaction, outgrew them, or just didn’t like them. My local Once Upon a Child, children’s consignment store, has boxes and boxes of name brand diapers at a fraction of the price. I have seen them at thrift stores as well. I love shopping half off days at my local kid’s consignment sales. I tend to always be able to grab packs of name brand diapers and training pants for a dollar or two. Be sure to compare the cost to a new pack at the store, but I have always saved 90% or more off the price overall!
Free Samples
Many baby registries will have a diaper or two to try out different brands. You can always sign up through the diaper companies and they will send you a sample of their products. Check out this post to learn more about what companies offer what!
Join Rewards Programs to Save Money on Diapers
Signing up with diaper companies can sometimes save money. Pampers Rewards offers points from every purchase towards prizes and discounts. They just sent me this when I was working on this post!
Don’t Be Eager to Jump Sizes
If your baby truly needs the next size, absolutely go up a size. However; some people are just eager to move up for whatever reason. Maybe they have a box of the next size up, so they start buying that. This is a bad idea though because the bigger the size diaper, the less you get in the package. Meaning, you’re paying more for less diapers.
Buy Diapers in Bulk
You don’t need a Sam’s Club membership to buy diapers in bulk. Sometimes, just buying the bigger box of diapers will save you more money than the smaller packs. Again, use your other tools, like pricing per diapers. When I buy Luvs, I buy the medium box. The smaller package and largest box are actually more expensive per diaper than the medium box. Mixed with coupons and rewards apps, I’m saving at least $7+ per box.
Use a Subscription Service
This may or may not save you money. If you’re brand loyal or your baby won’t tolerate any other brand, this may be a good option for you. For most of us, using a couple of these tips will save much more than the dollar or two you save with a subscription service, but it’s worth looking into.

Register for Diapers to Save Money on Diapers
Registering for diapers on your baby registry can really help the cost of diapers in that first year. Don’t register for newborn sizes. Your baby may not even wear them. Try registering for sizes 2 and 3. Most people will pick up a box of 1’s without thinking. I have found that my babies lived in 2’s and 3’s the longest. You can also get a completion discount on your registry that you may be able to use on those size 1 and newborn diapers right before they come.
