thrift shopping tips

I’ve been thrift shopping before it became “cool”. It was honestly out of necessity. Even though thrift stores aren’t exactly as good as they used to be, there are still some treasures and deals to be had out there! You just need to know what to look for and how to prepare.

1. Make a List Before You Go

Plan ahead by knowing what you need. Whether it’s clothes, home decor, or books, a list helps you avoid impulse buys and focus on the best finds.

2. Know Your Sizes and Measurements

Thrift stores rarely have standard sizing. Bring a measuring tape or know your measurements to ensure clothes fit—especially for online thrift stores.

If they offer changing rooms, make sure to try things on. Especially for stores that have strict return policies.

3. Go Often and At Different Times

Inventory changes frequently. Visit multiple times a week and at different times of day to catch new arrivals before anyone else. I also like to go to a few different places in one trip. This will save gas in the long run and allow you to see what’s out there.

4. Inspect Items Carefully

Check for stains, tears, missing buttons, or broken zippers. A little DIY repair can be worth it for a great deal, but avoid items that need major work. I can’t tell you how many times I got something home and noticed a stain later. It’s worth taking the time to thoroughly inspect the items.

5. Don’t Overlook Tags

Some thrift stores have hidden designer or vintage gems. Look beyond the front-facing items and check the tags to spot high-quality brands. The same can be said for cheap items. I have seen so many Dollar Tree items that I know can be purchased for $1.25 that Goodwill is charging $3 or more for. Just because it’s thrifted, doesn’t mean it’s always a good deal.

6. Check Seasonal Items Off-Season

Shop for winter coats in summer or swimsuits in winter. Off-season items are often discounted and less competitive.

7. Bring Cash

Some thrift stores offer cash-only discounts or lower prices on marked tags. A lot of our local thrift stores are also now charging more if you use a credit or debit card. It’s a simple trick to save even more.

8. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

Avoid buying things just because they’re cheap. Look for high-quality fabrics, durable furniture, and items that will last. I try to avoid buying generic brands second hand if I can help it. If it’s something I really like or am specifically looking for, I will.

For instance, if I am buying my children clothing, instead of buying a $2 Garanamials tshirt, I will buy a better brand that will last longer for the same price. I have no issues with Garanimals, but, it’s only about $4-5 brand new. Meanwhile, a high quality, brand name piece generally goes for 3-4 times the price they’re charging at the thrift store.

9. Shop With an Open Mind

Thrift shopping is all about creativity. Items you might not initially consider could be transformed with a little imagination or DIY touch. I buy all of my picture frames at the thrift store and paint them to look how I want them to. I can buy large, good quality frames at a fraction of the price.

10. Follow Thrift Stores on Social Media

Many stores post sales, new arrivals, and special events online. Following them can give you first access to the best deals.

11. Learn to Haggle

Some thrift stores and flea markets are open to negotiation. Don’t be afraid to ask politely for a lower price—especially on bundles or damaged items.

12. Bring a Tote Bag

Many thrift stores charge for bags. Bringing your own reusable bag can save money and is eco-friendly.

13. Check Online Thrift Platforms

Websites like Poshmark, ThredUp, and eBay can help you find hard-to-get items. Ebay is my favorite way to buy homeschool curriculum. If I had to rely on thrift stores, it would be difficult to get what I need.

14. Don’t Rush

Take your time browsing. Some of the best treasures are hidden on lower shelves or in corners. Patience pays off. If I am really wanting to take my time, I usually have to leave the children at home.

15. Wash or Sanitize Everything

Always clean thrifted clothing, linens, and household items before use. It’s a simple step to ensure hygiene and freshness.
