DIY Padsicles- A New Mama’s Best Friend
Baby number 5 will be here in just 5 weeks or less. You may have heard of the postpartum healing process or experienced it yourself. You may have seen a newer product called padsicles. Many companies make them now, but they are extremely easy and inexpensive to make yourself.
I don’t remember hearing about them with my first two children, but with my last two, I was able to make my own and they are really a game changer! They are extremely easy to make and store in advance. I’ve even used the same bottle of witch hazel for all three pregnancies.
What Are Padsicles?
Padsicles are simply frozen maxi pads that have witch hazel to bring comfort and relief to those early postpartum weeks. You will likely be sore and swollen down there, so these will help with inflammation. The witch hazel will help with keeping things clean and the aloe vera will help keep things cool.

Gather Your Supplies
- overnight maxi pads with wings
- witch hazel with aloe vera (unscented and alcohol-free)
- gallon size bag

How to Make DIY Padsicles:
The first step in making DIY padsicles is to lay out your pad. HOWEVER, do no remove any of the packaging. Carefully pull back the wings so you can apply the liquid.
Then, do a few passes with the witch hazel. Don’t saturate it.
Once you’ve done a few passes, simply wrap your pad back up.
After your pads are done, place them in a gallon freezer bag and put them in the freezer.
The amount you make is up to you! Depending on which baby this is, how your birth went, etc will depend on how many you will need. I used them the first few days, but didn’t feel like they were necessary after that. I made way too many the first time. You may make 6 or so and see if you need to make more. They’re so simple, I wouldn’t even mind asking someone to make me a few if I run out and needed more. You already will have the supplies!

DIY Padsicles FAQ:
Will the pads still absorb as much blood if drizzled with witch hazel?
They will be less absorbant for sure. Change to a regular pad once the padcicle isn’t cool and soothing anymore.
Thayers with aloe has two options: with alcohol and alcohol free. Does it matter which one?
Alcohol wouldn’t do any harm but might sting a bit. That’s why I would suggest alcohol-free to be more comfortable for you.
Can this also be used for c-section wound?
It’s best to leave the incision and keep it dry until it’s healed. Any ointments would be integrated later on. Best to check with your health care provider for pain relief options!
Is witch hazel safe for sensitive skin?
There is conflicting information on witch hazel for sensitive skin. You definitely want to avoid alcohol as an ingredient. I’d test it on a small spot in a sensitive area before making up a bunch of postpartum padcicles with it.
Can I use this method on cloth pads?
Yes! I actually prefer cloth pads during my normal menstrual cycle.
Do you take them straight out of the freezer and apply them or do you have to let them sit first?
Apply immediately. It will be a nice cooling affect 🙂
When should I change them out? Will they leak when warm?
You should change them out when they are no longer cool. They should not leak, if they are, you may have added too much liquid before freezing them.
Would this be the Thayers witch hazel facial toner?
