Savvy Strategies for Aldi Shopping: Finding Hidden Gems and Deals

Aldi is nothing new to me. I grew up shopping at Aldi. It didn’t quite have the reputation it does now. As a new wife, Aldi was the only place I would shop. Not everyone who shops at Aldi has always shopped there, so I figured I could offer some tips and tricks for how to shop Aldi.

Know When to Shop at Aldi

  • New sales start on Wednesdays
  • The Aldi app will send you push notifications letting you know when items you frequently buy are on sale

Use Rewards Apps to Save Money

While they don’t take Manufacture coupons you can Use apps like Ibotta (any brand items) or Fetch Rewards.

  • Ibotta – The offers are always changing but it’s so easy to get free food with this app!  [ GO HERE ] to sign up today!
  • Fetch Rewards – A free app that allows you to scan receipts, including e-receipts on purchases. They do give offers, but no matter where you shop, you can always get some points just for scanning your receipt.

Use Doordash to Order Groceries from Aldi

Aldi has recently been made available to shop on Doordash. Since this is new, they have had many special offers. Many items have been free, as well as buy one get one items. There is also a $0 delivery free over $40. If you sign up with this link, you also get $5 off your first order of $25 or more.

Know What to Buy When You Shop at Aldi

  • Try the Aldi brand items. In some cases, they are IDENTICAL to the name brands and are half the price! Aldi tied with P&G for most products of the year in 2021. A couple examples of identical name brand twins are Kraft Parmesan cheese and Ghirardelli brownie mix!
  • Check out the seasonal aisle for holiday stuff. Find advent calendars, wine, cheese, coffee, Christmas and Valentine candy, and home decorations.
  • Great Value (Walmart brand) items are at the least 50 cents more than Aldi brand items.
  • Watch for yellow and red Aldi Savers price stickers. This marks a sale item and in the lower right corner tells you when the sale date is over.
  • They’re very competitive on meat and milk. This is no doubt two of the items that have increased most due to inflation and supply chain shortages.
  • If you eat gluten-free, you’ll save on buying their Live G Free brand over Walmart.
  • Bakery items are discounted 50% off 2 days before they expire. Bread, bagels, and even cookies can be frozen in your deep freezer.
  • Their specialty cheeses have their own cult following.

Items to Avoid Buying at Aldi

  • You’ll get cheaper online or with coupons: diapers, toothpaste, laundry detergent.
  • Ordering online and picking up is a convenience, but will cost you not only a $3.99 pick up fee but items are marked up. It’ll cost almost 20% more than going in-store.

Bring Your Own

One way Aldi cuts costs and passes them down to the consumer is by not paying cart wranglers or people that bag your groceries.

  • Make sure you bring a quarter to “rent” a cart. These key rings make shopping at Aldi so much easier! Never forget your quarter again!
  • Bring your own bags or you will need to purchase some at checkout. I personally love the Aldi brand reusable bags they sell.
  • You can also help yourself to any empty boxes you find on the store shelves to pack your order. They also tend to have a large crate full of boxes in the middle of the store, making it easier than ever to grab boxes. It helps them out as well.

Twice as Nice Guarantee

Aldi stands behind all they sell. If you’re not happy with any product, return it for a full refund AND a replacement.

Check Your Receipt

As with any grocery shopping trip, be sure to check your receipt. Those Aldi cashiers are lightning quick and accidents do happen. I have gotten the same item rang up multiple times. It’s much easier to catch when you’re still by the checkout than after you go home.

Bag Your Groceries at Your Car

One of my favorite tips I learned for how to shop at Aldi was actually bagging my groceries at my car vs inside. There have been many instances where the bagging area was full or difficult to bag items. If you have small children, this is also especially helpful. I buckle my kids in and bag up my items at the back of my trunk. Much easier than trying to hurry in the store.

There you have it! My top tips and tricks for how to shop at Aldi. Do you shop at Aldi? What would you add to this list? Let me know down in the comments below!
