Why Make Hard-Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot?

Making hard-boiled eggs on the stove can be hit or miss—cracked shells, inconsistent texture, and over- or under-cooked yolks. Here’s why the Instant Pot method is a game changer:

  • Consistent results every time
  • Peels easily—even with fresh eggs
  • Hands-off cooking—set it and forget it
  • Quick and efficient, especially for large batches

Instant Pot Hard-Boiled Eggs

Here is my favorite way to make hard boiled eggs in the instant pot:

  • 6 minutes pressure cook
  • Quick Pressure Release
  • 10 minutes ice bath

Ingredients:

  • Eggs (up to 8-9 at once)
  • 1 cup water

Equipment:

  • Instant Pot (any model with a pressure cook function)
  • Trivet or steamer basket
  • Bowl of ice water

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Add Water to the Instant Pot

Pour 1 cup of cold water into the bottom of the pot.

2. Place Eggs on Trivet

Set the metal trivet or steamer basket inside the pot and place your eggs on top. You can cook as few or as many eggs as you like—I have found that 8-9 fit comfortably in my instant pot. Any more usually results in cracked eggs.

3. Pressure Cook for 6 Minutes

Secure the lid and set the valve to Sealing. Select Pressure Cook (or Manual) and set the timer to 6 minutes on High Pressure.

4. Quick Release

Once cooking is complete, click cancel or off. Then, do a quick release by switching the valve to Venting to release the pressure.

5. Ice Bath for 10 Minutes

Transfer the eggs immediately to an ice water bath for at least 10 minutes. This stops the cooking process and makes peeling a breeze.

Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Eggs

  • 🥚 Use older eggs for even easier peeling, though the Instant Pot method works well even with fresh eggs.
  • 🧊 Don’t skip the ice bath—it’s key to getting eggs that peel like a dream.
  • 🔁 If you’re making a big batch, store them unpeeled in the fridge for up to 1 week.

How Long Do Instant Pot Eggs Last?

Hard-boiled eggs made in the Instant Pot can be stored in the refrigerator for:

  • Up to 1 week unpeeled
  • 3–4 days peeled

Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
